Hi Reader,

I hope you are doing well! Our weather has been really wonderful here - I keep waiting for the hot weather bomb to drop, lol. The weather people are saying a few days in the 90s next week, but that doesn't sound nearly as bad as the rest of the country these past weeks.

There are two things I thought it would be good to talk about this week:

  • No cook recipes because in most places in the Northern Hemisphere it's still hot.
  • Fall gardening because we're getting close to the last days to get some seeds started.

Also what's new from the blog (August's Good Things + July's books read!) and a couple of things I'm loving - hopefully something for everyone!

No Cook Recipes

Did you know I have a whole section on the website for no bake and no cook recipes? Here are some favorites for this time of year:

Fall Gardening

I've already planted out a set of cabbages and broccoli about 4 weeks ago, as well as more lettuce. Above I've got seed trays of late fall and winter cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, turnips, as well as just planted Walla Walla onions (to overwinter), and more spinach and baby pak choi.

Wish me luck that they all sprout - I've already had to replant after some marauding chipmunks or squirrels (or birds πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ) dug out the seeds and sprouts from an earlier planting (it never ends around here, lol).

Here are some articles on planting a fall garden:

A Few More Things

  • I'm almost exclusively using Epic Gardening seed trays (as you can see in the photo of my trays above) - they are SO much easier to use than the flimsy store pots I reused, both filling and especially removing the tender seedlings to plant. I've got a set of 6-cell and a couple of the 4-cell trays and they've covered all my seeding needs this year - as soon as I plant out seedlings, I fill them again with plants for another succession planting.πŸ˜€ Look around my page at Epic with this link (scroll down to find the seed trays) and if you buy you will save 5%!
  • I'm listening to an old Rosamunde Pilcher book, Winter Solstice, which like all her books is a treat of characters and settings with a slow burn, real life series of events that serves as a plot. I always enjoy these slice-of-life type of books because they inevitably help me to see other's points of view as they navigate life's ups and downs. And a book set in the UK in December while I'm out watering in the warm sunshine? Very cooling.πŸ˜‚
