It was so encouraging to get so many responses from last week's newsletter with the link to my new physical cookbook, Easy Water Bath Canning: 40 Tried and True Recipes for Tomatoes, Pickles, and More! We've mailed the first 10 copies we had and put in a larger order that should be coming in about a week, so everyone who has or will preorder the book will be getting one right after they arrive! (There is a digital version that skips the shipping if you'd like.) I did get a few responses last week when I asked for ideas for the next cookbook, so I created this easy poll to help me decide. I'd love for you to cast your vote! π
These last few weeks after coming back from our Glacier trip have been busy, but odd because I'm usually inundated with produce from the garden as it winds down, but I'm not this year. During the last two weeks of September and into October I'm most often roasting tomato sauce to freeze, drying tomatoes to store in oil, and putting up more green beans by pickling or freezing. But no. I've barely had enough tomatoes for fresh eating!! And the beans have pretty much stopped producing, as have the peppers. It's so weird, I don't think I've done anything different. I'm wondering if I need a bigger boost to my soil next spring or something - not just compost but actual manure? On the plus side, I have loads of green tomatoes that don't look like they'll be ripening (next week's forecast calls for rain every day...), so I'll be able to make quite a few recipes from my Green Tomato Recipes Cookbook. π The other thing we've been doing is watching football! I've become more of a fan the last few years as players I know have gone from college to the NFL and there's always been something about football and fall that just go together for me. I love it! The other thing that goes with football is...dips, of course! When there's a big game we're looking forward to, I always try to have a dip or two to go along with it. Game Day Dips
(I actually have a whole category of "Game Day Recipes" right here that include things like chili, nuts, and finger desserts that all go over well with everyone!) β In My KitchenMy grandma gave me a mini crockpot for our wedding that I still use for warming dips! So yes, its old and they don't make it anymore, ha! But I did find this 1.5 qt slow cooker that's a bit bigger, but also more functional for other small servings, I think - you could cook and serve the Taco Dip right in it. And it's less than $15, so not a big investment and handy to have. And then I use small oblong ramekins like these (I have the white, but the other colors are fun) to bake things like dips and smaller servings of recipes. Neither of these take up a lot of room, so they've followed me through the years in different homes and I'm glad to have them even though I don't use them regularly. π From The BlogA Few More ThingsBrian and I have decided to try planting clover in our yard since nothing else grows well and everything looks so brown and dead by the end of June. I found this microclover called "pipolina" that stays short without mowing and doesn't flower as much as regular clover. Fingers crossed we can get it to establish in our terrible yard that's full of gophers!! We just finished listening to another book together, John LeCarrΓ©'s The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and it's very good! I can see why it put him on the map (it was his third book, but first big seller) - although I just learned it's part of a series! The series is "George Smiley" but he was a background player in this - and that very far in the background - so you don't need to know the other books to read/listen to this one. β Here's to a great week to enjoy the autumn colors that are turning. π Be sure to hit reply with any thoughts or suggestions, I love hearing from you! Know someone who'd appreciate this? Forward it along! β PS- Remember to tag me on Instagram so I can see what you're making! β *You can read An Oregon Cottage's full disclosure policy here. Not only was it personally fulfilling to see these two books I've labored over received well, but Brian and I had fun watching the sales come in and then packaging up each order.π Of course even though the sale is over, I still think the canning...

But that didn't stop us from having our scheduled date night where we had some great BBQ at a local restaurant and then saw the movie, Good Fortune, which I wasn't sure about from the trailer but turned out to be pretty good. The rest of our week was pretty normal, which got me to...
